Elena Roger Brings Native Touch to Broadway ‘Evita’
NYTimes.com: EVITAS tend to be formidable women — Patti LuPone, Madonna, Elaine Paige — so Elena Roger, the Argentine actress who stars in the Broadway revival that opens April 5, stuns at first glimpse.
Evita is one of my all time favorite musicals, os I'm very excited that there is another Broadway revival coming soon. Hopefully it will still be playing by the time I have enough money to take a trip to New York, or will at least tour through Pittsburgh while I'm around.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I think it is by no means necessary for an actor to have real ethnic roots to their character, I'm sure Ms. Rogers's personal / familial understanding of the political situation(s) surrounding the Peróns.
Have I said too much? There is nothing more I can think of to say to you.
Though, I agree with Pia that it is by no means necessary for an actor to have the same ethnic roots as the character they are portraying, I would love to see the impact that it had on the character. I’m sure that Ms. Roger plays the role of Evita very differently than an actress with a less personal connection to the Perons. I think that having a real personal connection to the story also helps actors keep the show fresh and full of energy even after doing eight performances a week for several months.
