Backstage: "The union that covers Broadway theater cleaners, porters and matrons, 32BJ SEIU, announced that it had reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract with the Broadway League, the industry association representing theater owners and producers at more than 30 New York theaters."
Despite working in the backstage world of theater, there are still times where I am amazed when I hear about unions like porters and matrons. While I know that the cleaning of the theater is a job that someone has to do, I never realized that their was a full union just dealing with this aspect of theater. For some reason, I assumed that theaters just created contracts with local cleaning companies, rather then had a full union dedicated to this work. I guess this is just yet another theater job that most people never think about that if it did not exist would make theater a whole lot less enjoyable.
