Led: The World's Largest LED Screen Is, Of Course, In Dubai
Gizmodo: "It's not built quite yet, but Tameer Holding is constructing the world's largest LED screen in Dubai for a commercial office building named The Podium. The gigantic display will be implemented as the building's facade, reaching 33 stories into the sky and maintaining visibility up to a mile away."

Sounds like overkill to me. There is something to be said for bold and in your face advertising (as in it might be effective, not that it is attractive), but this is getting a little excessive.
As a gigantic screen for the display of digital art, this might be a fantastic and worth while piece of technology. I'm sure there are digital artists around the world waiting for mediums of this size to display gigantic images to the world. However, if all we're going to get over this large screen is commercials and billboard like information, sounds like a waste of money.
i appreciated that this article pointed out that the interior of the building most likely will not be ideal, because i often think when using such high-tech products the practical elements that they affect are not considered. also, i would like to add how difficult this will make it for other buildings that are going up around this building. i wouldn't want to work or live across the street or desert pathway from this gaudy monstrosity.
That will make for some expensive advertising. Amazing how the desire for a profit can fuel some of the most fool-hardy projects.
Still, it's awesome in a "let's-do-something-way-out-there-because-we-can" sort of way. I found the fact that the screen will not affect the natural light filtering into the building interesting as well. How far apart would the LEDs have to be spaced in order to appear as a solid image but still let light through?
That's really big. Dubai is growing like crazy the past 5-10 years and this is just another testimony to that progress. I wonder how much power that thing will draw. Sure it's all leds, but that's still a really big ass screen. I sure would hate to have to wire that beast.
That would take a heck of alot of power. But Hey, besides all the issues of power and architecture, just think how much money you could make on advertising with a sign like that! I mean if you think about it, people who own the digital billboards around highways make a killing as is.
that's so strange. i thought the biggest would be in china, after seeing the opening ceremony for the olympic. it would be ridiculous amount of power, but i don't think that would be their main issue. i would love to see it lit when it's done.
I'm curious as to how they say light will still be able to get in. What exactly is the purpose of this display. Looks like mostly advertising. Amazing that in today's world it makes sense to put that much money into advertising. Either way, it's an impressive engineering feat. The next question: will it be maintained or will sections (or rather, the board driving them) go bad like so many LED displays we see around.
I'm curious to see what king of kinks this thing ends up with. I mean, if the workers aren't getting that sunlight everyday that they would've that otherwise come in through their windows, physiologically, they'll be a lot more depressed than before. This could be bad for business. A trade off: advertising for the health of the workers? Doesn't seem like a good trade off.
I am convinced that Dubai has some kind of complex about making everything absurdly gigantic. Are they making up for the lack of something? First, the underwater hotel and now this. I agree with everyone, this is complete overkill. I cannot imagine the screen being an aesthetic asset to the city even if they played artistic movies on it like the screen on Forbes. Forget placing it near an intersection. It would cause traffic jams, if not car accidents!
We must remember that Dubai is known as a city of opulence and ridiculous wealth. Their hotels have gold-plated shaving razors for both men and women. Right or wrong, i think it is appropriate or at least expected that this city would have the largest LED. Its what the world expects and Dubai is quick to give everyone what they want.
I love it. Oh the things you can do when you have the highest GDP in the world.
I want one. Maybe I will at least be able to afford 1sq ft of advertising space. I wonder how the other side of the building feels about being the dark side? kind of mean eh? Really though, I wonder if that will produce much heat on that side of the building. There are a lot of things there that could cause unexpected problems, especially the allowing light to pass through.
Holy !@#*!
Dubai is crazy, every time you think they have out done themselves in the creation of this fool's paradise, well they go and do something else that is completely unnecessary. i honestly can't even fathom the size of this screen, nor can i fathom the need for something of this size. i just have to remind myself that it is a bunch of wealth being blown on egos.
