The SENSES Are Present in Boycott’s Endurance Art Series

HowlRound Theatre Commons: We keep gathering to ingest stories of struggle and triumph, to observe human complexity, to see the plight of others and be seen in return, and we have gathered like this since before Homer's time. We relish the opportunity to recognize ourselves in a character’s goodness, yet cower at the familiarity of uglier human traits, imperfection, fury—impulsively turning away lest we risk being witnessed in our rage.

The first still of Oakley Boycott in the Sinks Cave has to be my favorite moment from the entire video. One of my favorite aspects of any film is the use of color and contrast. Boycott employed these techniques so powerfully to show that disconnect between them and nature. The bright red is so distinct from the light grays and blues of the snow and rocks in the cave. There is also such a cohesion between the colors, with the grays having brown-red streaked through them and the red perfectly contrasting the light blue of the snow. This serves to set up the message of struggling to connect with nature for the rest of the film, where thai idea contrasts the described “sterile” feeling of indoor museums and libraries. This lack of belonging in any space, propelled by the continued industrial expansion and deforestation of Earth. I cannot wait to hear more about other’s opinions on this piece.
