ETC controls help penguins find their feet

et cetera...: Following the notoriety of its Breaking Bad locations tour, the City of Albuquerque has added another startling tourist attraction: a colony of penguins.

The Penguin Chill exhibit at the city’s ABQ BioPark is the first of its kind in the Southwest. We wanted to know how well the new residents were adapting to their Southwest home and sent a Penguin-speaking ETC reporter for this exclusive interview.

This was a sweet little article. It was odd, and took me a second to understand. It is a comical faux interview for a penguin. It reminds me of the British show Creature Comforts, which is stop motion animation interviews of animals.
Seems the penguins do really get the “star treatment.” Fish, a tank, and amazing lighting. I learned that penguins are “tetrochromatic,” meaning they process more of the light spectrum than we do. For this reason, the lights in their enclosure flicker at a rate of 25,000 HZ, which is imperceptible to the penguins. The lighting is also wet-location rated. Its all LED, and matches Antarctica.
I thought the little video at the end of the article was especially nice to see. All the children were mesmerized by the penguins, and i’m sure the penguins were mesmerized by the lights. I’m glad to learn a bit more about the technical elements in a static exhibit, as opposed to something more artistic like theatre or film.
