Did Critics Treat 13 With Kid Gloves?

Steve On Broadway (SOB): "While the really big news today, of course, is the further sliding of the global economy, as evidenced by this morning's sell-off on Wall Street, further to the north on Broadway, yesterday, Jason Robert Brown's musical 13 rocked the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre."

  1. At first, I was intrigued to see this show, but even these "meddling" reviews have turned me off from the show. Brown's score is decent, but anyone who is familiar with his other work is going to be somewhat disappointed because his other work is so much stronger. I can see the challenge in writing for a different age group, by, in the end, the music still seems like an offshoot of the HSM soundtrack, which people will not view as a good thing. I will be surprised if this show lasts past the end of 2008.

  2. I think this was very wise of Brown. at this point in theatre, many of the audiences are younger and the musical genre has become a peak of interest for this age group because of High School Musical and such. However, I remember when Legally Blonde came out, they said much of their audiences were teens. Legally Blonde obviously ran out of teens to see the show, since they are closing, so we will see how long 13 lasts, my guess is not long.

  3. I feel like this show has picked two specific of a demographic. Never mind that they are essentially targeting a age range of 3-4 years but are also targeting that range which is unable to get themselves to the theatre to see the show. While this may be the same for shows like High School Musical, parents for whatever reason found it ok to take their children and sit through that performance. I am not sure if "13" offers enough for parents to want to attend it as well.

  4. I'm okay with it. I am incredibly interested in attracting younger audiences to the theatre. If this is what it's going to take to get young teens interested in theatre, then so be it. I just hope they can appreciate all of the aspects of the show rather than just the singing at child stars
