Clearly Mr. Brannigan loves his job as a stagehand, and makes interesting comparisons to how different it is to be a stagehand today as it was to work as a stagehand years ago. I never thought of computerized lighting as being a threat to the jobs of stagehands before, however I would bet they also never predicted that with computerized lighting control would come the amount of intelligent lights and media devices that are now a part of lighting networks. Regardless the numbers at the end of the article are an indication of the success of the union, and the stagehand industry as a job fore.
It's interesting to see the leap in the work of stagehands from one generation to another. It's less common now for someone to disappear from their families for a year at a time though I do know people that tour 8 or 9 months out of the year. It's always fascinating when the family traditions keep on going from generations to generations. Maybe because I decided to do something completely different from my parent, I feel it can be really honorable if one can keep the career. But even, Mr. Brannigan loves what he does, which makes it even better.
