Carnegie Mellon Art Students Display Their Work on Local Billboards
WebWire: "Eight works of art are now on display on Pittsburgh-area billboards as a result of a collaboration between School of Art students at Carnegie Mellon University and Lamar Outdoor Advertising. This is the second time in as many years that School of Art students have had the opportunity to make their art visible to tens of thousands of people around Pittsburgh every day."
That's really great that Carnegie Mellon has the resources to do something like this. Not only does this help promote art and help the artists show their work but my making it public they could get a chance to get noticed as artists.
ReplyDeleteI really like the approach that the students took in approaching the art knowing that it was going up onto a billboard. IT would have been very easy for this to become an instance of art being put on the highways for the sake of publicity, ir just for art's sake, but the artists here really took the scale and media into account and tried to bring a new message to the billboards that the average commuter would not be able to find on their everyday drive.
ReplyDeleteI think this is telling of the talent of CMU students and the respect that the name gets, which is pretty exciting to see first hand. I love the idea of exploring billboards as pop art and transforming something I consider to be one of the worst effects of commericalism into a valid art form--I think it's important for young artists to think about what we really want our world to physically look like in the future and how we can make it better, more interesting, and more meaningful.
ReplyDeleteIn my eyes this is one of the most practical applications art students can take advantage of at Carnegie Mellon. So much of their careers seems to be exhausted by issues of the mainstream media and commercialism, that I think this is a way of allowing students to respond artistically and ineffectually.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other comments above- this seems like a great opportunity for the art students. It's nice that CMU students are getting their work out there and an interesting assignment to work on- art that's billboard sized and meant for the masses.
ReplyDeleteit will be interesting to see how quickly the public reacts to this. Billboards tend to be one of those things that are just blown off and never really focused on. the idea of putting meaningful art up on these structures will completely change how the public views them, and they will communicate a more meaningful message then the typical advertisement that would be there.
ReplyDeletewhat? no pictures? no mention of where the billboards are?
ReplyDeletei love this idea of displaying artwork instead of advertising on billboards. it seems to follow the same idea as putting plants or flowers in an apartment window - things can be spruced up and made to look nice with just the simplest of changes.
