Stand Up Meetings - Lose the Chairs and Save Time

OrganizingLA Blog: "A few years ago, I worked for a Los Angeles company that had a lot of meetings. The gatherings were long and boring, but I guess it was important for everyone to have their say. At that stage of my personal business evolution, I just accepted the fact that the meeting formats weren't going to change. But something did change them, for the better."

  1. I am intrigued to try the stand up meeting. In incorporating this idea to our enviornment here, i'm not sure if 20 people would want to stand for the meeting, but i think that the principle behind the idea can be very sucessfully implemented.

When you just stop someone in the hallway for a business conversation, you get right to the point, and an answer is acheived. The same works for the office pop-in. If its not worth writing an email about, a yes or no question can just be a head poke in the office. Its a way to save time, show some inter-human interaction and it gives me a sense of accomplishment to just check things off the to do list by walking around the building.

I agree with Rico in that implementing this can save a lot of time and prevent aggravation. I try not to send so many e-mails out because it's easy to get carried away with questions and it's also a lot easier to misconstrue a simple question for a complex one. The standing meeting is an interesting idea though given the number of people at our meetings, as Rico mentioned, it's difficult to do something like that on a whim.

  3. I'm really taken with this idea. It's simple in it's means and it changes a lot in the way of how the meeting is executed. I think this would be a good type of meeting for those where one just wants to update or just have the group talk quickly about an idea. But of course in a lot of situations this type of meeting would not work. In the meetings where the topic is of importance and there is a lot to cover having people stand would be a horrible idea. But for those quick little chats standing is way to do it.
