Saddam's "hanging" sold out in Indian theater
Reuters.com: "Saddam Hussein might have an outside chance of escaping the hangman's noose through an appeal process in Baghdad but, for followers of Indian folk theater, the toppled Iraqi leader is already a dead man."
While Saddam has undeniably done atrocious things and been an agent of death for hundreds of thousands of innocent people, something about this show still makes me feel ill. Do not get me wrong, i agree with nothing Saddam has done or stands for..but the idea of mass profit stemming from hundreds of people watching a show about a man's imminent death by hanging is rather grotesque. It would be one thing if there seemed to be some higher statement or purpose of the show, but from what the article says, it seems like this theatre is simply making a habit of putting on shows which discuss the most contemporary, emotionally scarring, or politically charged topics. Even as a last ditch effort to save the art form it seems rather tactless and coarse route to take.
I agree completely with Samantha. I really don´t see the point of such a show. I think it´s in bad taste to perform the death of a man, regardless he has been a killer or not. Besides, and this is a more personal opinion, I think death penalty, even in Sadam´s case, is an outrage against human rights.
It is true that Saddam has done terrible things, but it is not right that people would take such pleasure in such an event. We often talk about what would make a great play in directing class and though it is an interesting story, with how many awful things Saddam has done, it seems wrong to make a production out of it.
