For instance, I was expecting that the advice might boil down to treating popular artists like normal people and not being overly awkward or obsessive about them, which the article definitely does say, but at the same time, one of the first points is to do a ton of advance research into the person by listening to podcasts, reading interviews, etc. And I totally don’t disagree––I think that can be a really useful tool when working with someone new. It’s just kind of odd to think that there is this expectation to get familiar with a person’s reputation and online presence when they are ultimately just another person, and obviously they don’t have to do that for you. Again I don’t disagree that it’s a smart move, it just stood out to me for some reason. Especially when some of the advice is to pay particular attention to their language patterns and essentially mimic them to build rapport (reflective listening). I have never seen this show, but I imagine that if the way that the stage manager leads the company is any indication of its quality, it must be spectacular. I've never heard of the story that it is telling but the source material sounds very thought-provoking. I also think that it is worth mentioning that Productions on Broadway are now starting to use Tik Tok as a way to share progress, photos, videos, and other important backstage data with audiences around the world; bringing in more attention to the process as a whole. I always enjoy watching these videos to get an inside scoop on what is happening on Browadway.
Marion Mongellonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-85477385510710662932024-03-18T16:34:01.507-04:002024-03-18T16:34:01.507-04:00I am using this article as an opportunity to promo...I am using this article as an opportunity to promote Räyya, Jackson, and Sukie’s line at the Lunar Gala this year. They are so incredible, as people and as creatives, and I CANNOT WAIT to see their collection that closes the fashion show this year. Last year, by extraordinary, spectacular, stupendous, gorgeous, awesome, incredible, breathtaking, talented, intelligent, and overall MAGNIFICENT big, Emma Pollet, now working at La Jolla Playhouse and soon to be president and princess of the universe, designed and built her own fashion line for Lunar Gala 2023. I cried and screamed at her utter beauty and awesomeness, and I know I will again this year as I see my dear friends grace that stage. I wish the tickets were less expensive. I am always in awe of how the team is able to transform the lowly CMU Wiegand Gym into a breathtaking platform to present these works of art. I feel like I have tried so many options to optimize my workflow. Over the last almost two years here at Carnegie Mellon, my workload has only gotten more overwhelming, the need for an effective method of task management has only gotten more necessary. I have landed (for now) on using only Google Suite for managing my entire life (which is probably a bad idea considering they have like all of my data.) The idea that tasks hold different values and, separate from that, are ranked on a scale in terms of time investment/ difficulty, is interesting to me. I think I have subconsciously been doing this for my whole life, and I have a feeling this article will relate to a future class we have in PRM with Shay for “Getting Things Done.”
Marion Mongellonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-49241173234615058882024-03-18T15:55:02.127-04:002024-03-18T15:55:02.127-04:00The video for this post was unfortunately unavaila...The video for this post was unfortunately unavailable. I do think the concept of an elephant flying over Disneyland is incredibly interesting though, and is something I would definitely like to see. This was absolutely an interesting and creative way to solve problems, and makes me wonder why and how this elephant, which is definitely not one of the most technologically advanced things in the theme parks. It's also interesting to consider that Disney has practically unlimited funds to give their many Jungle Cruise elephants a first-class helicopter ride every few years. It makes me wonder if the elephants in Disney World, which was made after the California ride, get this princess treatment. I wonder what that little guy was thinking and did up there on his magical Dumbo ride, and what guests must have thunk when they looked up on their vacation.
Marion Mongellonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-82291140910674745172024-03-18T15:23:33.734-04:002024-03-18T15:23:33.734-04:00I really cannot believe it is 2024 and these types...I really cannot believe it is 2024 and these types of articles are still written. I don’t know if it is the audience and consumers/ clientele or if it is truly systemic. I feel like we as a youth have enough power and voice to make a change about beauty standards and body norms. But I guess we still don't. Is the world of dance toxic mainly due to the nature of movement and what looks ‘good’ onstage? Or is it some not-so-secret hatred for certain body types? Especially for women, because I have experienced it myself in dance class. It was always a comment about the young girl's bodies that would affect me, and was that for the better of the dance? Or was it for a look that just needed to be achieved? I think classical dance should still exist and ballet can be ballet, but dance is so much more than that. It is bodily expression and any body is perfect for this.
willavuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05562932248165230051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-3546868466634953412024-03-18T15:17:29.068-04:002024-03-18T15:17:29.068-04:00Modesty Garments are something I only learned abou...Modesty Garments are something I only learned about relatively recently. I follow an intimacy coordinator on instagram and she talks a lot about types of modesty garments and what types are used when. In the end she emphasizes it all comes down to how comfortable the actor is which I think is a really great standard to set. It’s really awesome that more movies are asking for modesty garments. They’re super important for intimate scenes. I hope that we’ll learn more about them on the costume design track. I honestly really enjoyed the John Cena moment at the oscars. I thought it was funny and clever. I know a lot of people were upset about it and thought it was weird but I enjoyed it enough. I think it was a bit out of the blue and I was a bit taken aback but I thought it was fun enough. I didn’t really understand all the hate.
Asterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08481174906068174028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-31540285690590368362024-03-18T15:14:17.341-04:002024-03-18T15:14:17.341-04:00This article was extremely inspiring. I don't ...This article was extremely inspiring. I don't think enough young people dream anymore. I remember when I was a child, I wanted to be everything. From an astronaut to president of the United States. People's dreams are less whimsical and challenging. Rather than people enjoying doing something, I think this generation's main problem is the media. It is all too comfortable and easily accessible, people look through a screen before letting their outside environments provoke them. Jennifer Morrison is a perfect example of someone who dreamed big. Morrison is especially special to me because of her connection to the writer Margret Atwood. Atwood speaks for women and a message to this corrupt society. Morrison aspired to be an actress/ performer and she accomplished this while also sending a message. I think this is what is so important about expressionism– the ability to be challenged in a shallow sense, but it also pushes you to make a statement and help better other perceptions of reality.
willavuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05562932248165230051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-55627769262610379442024-03-18T15:02:28.296-04:002024-03-18T15:02:28.296-04:00Art can be wasteful; this is something I have seen...Art can be wasteful; this is something I have seen time and time again when striking shows both in and out of the School of Drama. Although I have never been a part of a dance company I grew up with many close friends who were dancers and seen how many pointe shoes dancers go through at a time. In St.Louis there's a giant shoe built of smaller shoes. This piece is what I think of when I think of show art but I also love how inspiring the imagery of pointe shoes can be for young dancers. I think that giving away signed pointe shoes as gifts or to young dancers is a smart way to both reduce waste and give away a cheap and plentiful souvenir. The third point for pointe shoe reuse is to create something distinctly not shoe shaped or with the purpose of a shoe. This is new to me but I am so curious to learn more about this creative way to reuse shoes.
Theo Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13698283327005140801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-46401233408680229732024-03-18T15:02:21.949-04:002024-03-18T15:02:21.949-04:00This is why theater is so cool and amazing to me. ...This is why theater is so cool and amazing to me. It is truly an art form, theater is about the creation of worlds, it takes plays and musicals and crafts a world that the characters interact with. It is whimsical and kind of fun to create these worlds. The idea is that every day you go to work as a brain-producing piece of this made-up world. It is almost like a puzzle inside your own head. The idea that ‘no two days are the same,’ makes me very excited, this causes creative minds to blossom. It also pushes you out of the box consistently. I would like to live a life like this, but I would with art and not theater. I respect theater and think it is awesome sometimes, but art can be so many things, something more undefined which I find interesting. I don’t understand how some people can basically live in groundhog day!
willavuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05562932248165230051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-65480873414010337982024-03-18T14:52:13.144-04:002024-03-18T14:52:13.144-04:00I clicked on this article because it is always int...I clicked on this article because it is always intriguing to me what tools are the best. High-quality materials will always be a necessity, to make anything great and anything you care about, it should be made out of good supplies and good materials/tools. I don't see a point in making something bad but cheap. In comparing this to art, of course, art doesn’t need to be made with good quality materials, but I don’t see a point in creating something you care about with not cared-for materials. Art supplies are expensive and hard to acquire, however, I feel like if you have the money you should only be making art, (applies to craft as well), as something as a connection/ reflection of yourself. Art is so powerful to me that it feels like it is a piece of a human, for people who cannot physically have children, this is the closest thing to it. So overall, it is important to care about your materials and tools.
willavuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05562932248165230051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-79384902468484647632024-03-18T14:30:30.712-04:002024-03-18T14:30:30.712-04:00Julian Glander is someone quite inspiring to me. N...Julian Glander is someone quite inspiring to me. Not because I am dying to pursue video game design, animation, and definitely not Jeopardy. But the fact that Glander can pull it all off is what is interesting to me. I am someone who likes to acquire skills, I think trade skills are something that will never ‘get old.’ Knowing how to do stuff will not go out of trend. One of the reasons I like to do technical theater, and am doing it even though I don’t see myself doing tech all my life. Is because it teaches me skills that I can translate into everyday life. It also can be a creative outlet. I think any real artist needs to know how to do skills, an artist cannot be reliant on someone to do something else for their art. Art is something that is of course collaborative with the eye, but it is extremely individualistic. I was raised by artists who did everything for themselves, they also aren’t strictly one thing. Both began as painters but realized art should be interdisciplinary, now they are art artists– painters, printmakers, sculptors, screen printers, and that is what an artist should be. willavuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05562932248165230051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-32057450651398942202024-03-18T13:47:14.310-04:002024-03-18T13:47:14.310-04:00The MIT knit dress is so cool. Obviously the fabric is very much in the early development stages and is quite expensive, however it is also really cool. I wonder how it is actually programmed. Do you upload a model? I also really like that this fabric is reusable. I wonder exactly how much the fabric can stretch and shrink. How hot does it have to get? Can you mold it to the model who will be wearing the dress or does to get too hot and has to be on a mannequin. I’m also curious about the chemical makeup of the yarn itself. What allows it to shrink? I think this technology has a lot of potential but it’s just so new. I’m very interested in and excited to see how it will grow in the coming years. I hope it doesn’t just become another piece of technology that is forgotten over time.
Asterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08481174906068174028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-10162505903471375382024-03-18T13:24:12.652-04:002024-03-18T13:24:12.652-04:00I didn’t know UCLA did a diversity report and now ...I didn’t know UCLA did a diversity report and now I’m happy I do. It was really interesting to read. If I have the time I would like to go back and read their old reports as well. This article did a good job at breaking down some of the issues within Hollywood in regards to diversity. There’s still a lack of female directors in the top 300 films and the lack of female directors receiving a large budget. One thing this article pointed out which was really interesting is that women and people of color tend to drive box office sales and yet they are the people that are the least represented in the industry. There was honestly more disability representation than I expected. I can’t remember seeing any disabled people in movies that came out this last year. 3 of the top 20 films had disabled actors. I suppose disabled actors don’t have to play disabled characters and thus I wouldn’t know. However that number is higher than I thought and that is generally good news.
Asterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08481174906068174028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-69704406995870544652024-03-18T13:14:13.107-04:002024-03-18T13:14:13.107-04:00I love Shakespeare and I love what Pittsburgh Shak...I love Shakespeare and I love what Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Park is doing for the week of Shakespeare’s birthday. I love video games and I love theater and I love the idea of using video games to do theater. GTA is a game where the whole point is to kill other people and steal their vehicle so it is really funny to me that they decided to make Hamlet in GTA. In this article they talk about hiring security within the game and having stage hands that are other players to help them make the play and “protect” the actors. I would really love to watch this documentary as it is about the making of Hamlet in Grand Theft Auto but it’s also about the impact of the pandemic on the emotional well being of people. It talks about how lonely people were and how that really hurt some of the makers of this documentary.
Asterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08481174906068174028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-41573815183237874492024-03-18T09:23:27.292-04:002024-03-18T09:23:27.292-04:00The beloved Disney movie “Tangled” is so special ...The beloved Disney movie “Tangled” is so special to so many audiences. I have been on multiple Disney Cruises, yet have never had the pleasure of seeing this stage show. My family has, however, and all I have heard are rave reviews. Although I haven't seen the production, it was incredibly interesting watching a video about how it was made. Seeing such special stories be brought to life on stage is so thought provoking.Having rehearsal videos in the video was very cool because as a stage manager I love to see what different rehearsal rooms can look like, and Disney's definitely run like a tight ship. One day, I would love to work on a Disney cruise line to see how they do it. I can't imagine what the backstage of that theater looks like, especially One that is floating on the ocean, and that has multiple shows going on at once.
Marion Mongellonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-52201481554184152162024-03-17T22:08:48.004-04:002024-03-17T22:08:48.004-04:00

The quote that struck me the hardest was “if you wanted healthcare, if you wanted benefits, you could’ve gone into business”. It is very similar if you wanted to make money you should have chosen another career path. Those two statements frustrated me for so many reasons. It implies that because people are doing a career that is not traditional it means they do not deserve to make a good wage and have things like health insurance. It also implies that if you want to do something you are passionate about, it means giving up things as essential and important as a good wage and healthcare. I often think about situations like suffs where the show starts off broadway with non union positions and then moves to broadway. It seems like all the people that were not union working on the original show loose all credit. I wonder why not take those people to Broadway and let them continue their work and I understand it is more complicated than that but it just gets me thinking about unions and their benefits and how the industry is run. I follow a TV and film intimacy coordinator on tik tok and she often talks about and shows modesty garments and at first I was like what is the point of that I don't get it it's literally tiny. But after more research and seeing how they actually fit on people and actually cover I understood. I think if more people knew about modesty garments they would not be as quick to get headed or concerned for actors. I also think about all the times people who are not in the industry will bring up how weird it must be to film a sex scene with someone else not realizing all the things that go into protecting an actor and making them feel as comfortable as possible. I personally still do not think with all the things I would ever feel comfortable enough to do what john cena did but I applaud both him and the team for making sure he felt comfortable.Ella McCulloughhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18238520318072852240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-53267874457685205742024-03-17T21:53:42.718-04:002024-03-17T21:53:42.718-04:00I watched this tik tok a while ago and really love...I watched this tik tok a while ago and really loved it. I think that the publicity team for this show is absolutely killing it. And not only are they killing it overall but they are doing an especially good job of highlighting technical aspects and stage management along the way. I think the first time I saw what a broadway theater looks like during tech was when it came up on my for you page a couple weeks ago. Cody is a new stage management discovery for me and I quickly become obsessed. This video is a great example of how smoothly he explains very complicated things and ensures everyone's safety while also having fun and staying calm and regulated. You can tell he is comfortable with himself and his instructions and his team is receiving it well. This is essential when it comes to something like safety and he is an inspiration to me and so many others. You never know what challenges are gonna present themselves or what kind of project you will work on next. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and think damn I would be really nice if I could just learn a skill and do it everyday. I wouldn't have to think about it so much and it would be easier. But then when I am in situations where that is true I get so restless and bored. When I was working at American Eagle folding clothes over and over for hours or checking customers out I hated my life. I was so bored because there was nothing keeping me engaged or interested. I need new things to focus on. Theatre still has structure which limits my stress but it is always changing and that's what keeps it interesting and worthwhile. I cannot decide if I am a fan of this idea or not. I like the idea of assigning each task number based on effort and result because I could see it being helpful with deciding what carries more weight. I just don’t know if I would use this. I list my to-list based on when it needs to be done and unfortunately for me everything on my list has to get done so I usually try my best to just start at the top and work my way down. However, sometimes I am really struggling to focus on a certain task and I will jump around to another task. I think sometimes people get stuck with to-do lists because they feel like they have to get the most important thing done and they cannot do anything else until that is done and I just do not think that is true. My mood, energy, ability to focus and so much more dictate which task I work on. So maybe I could implement this strategy to give me more information on a task but I do not think I would use it to decide what I do first as that is always changing. I think sound is fascinating, though I sometimes say “it doesn’t work with my brain, or I don’t have a sound tech mind” as a more visually oriented designer, I think that it’s uses and capabilities are so cool and people who are able to harness that and make such awesome art are so incredible. The idea of fostering a working relationship with people is super useful for literally any job or situation. Often in the entertainment industry I hear of designers and directors, or certain relationships like that “pairing up,” like how you’ll see some film directors always using the same production designers, as they know what works for them and can easily communicate. In terms of mixing sound for concerts, it seems like it can be different though also sometimes go the same (like they mentioned mixing for upcoming artists), though the thought of making something so classic (for older well known artists) sound as everyone expects it to be is somewhat terrifying. It was cool reading the tips for doing that better.
Helen Maleenynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-10528112749053286962024-03-17T15:25:28.856-04:002024-03-17T15:25:28.856-04:00I remember watching this scene and being shocked, ...I remember watching this scene and being shocked, and then curious on what actually they were doing, if there was an intimacy garment and how was it so well hidden. It was a baffling skit, though it indeed made a point and was quite entertaining. In reading this I was surprised and shocked by how many details there were and how specific modesty garments are made, though it makes so much sense once reading it. Having these productions in place during intimacy scenes are so important, and it’s cool how advanced they’ve gotten, in John Cena’s skit you really couldn’t tell he was wearing anything from the screen. I wonder how they came up with some of the details, like adding shoe insoles, etc for padding during intimate scenes. Overall this was a fascinating read, and super cool that a random skit at the Oscars brought to light the work of these people to improve boundaries and comfort during intimate moments in film scenes.
Helen Maleenynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16731483.post-19846244620143238392024-03-17T15:24:56.440-04:002024-03-17T15:24:56.440-04:00At first when reading this I was skeptical of how ...At first when reading this I was skeptical of how it would help, it seemed to be listing things about a “creative rut” that I already knew, and though I find these articles quite interesting, they don’t always work for everyone. Some of their tips for resetting your mindset when it comes to creative thinking were interesting however. The first tip, taking a shower, reminded me of this one author (unfortunately I forget who) who said that he writes so many books so fast because he’ll write many pages within each day, and the way he doesn’t get stuck is by taking a shower 5-6 times that day to ‘reset’ his thinking and trick himself into starting fresh - a cool concept when thinking on how he’s figured out his way to ‘crack the system.’ The sleep one I’ve heard, it reminded me of when I was younger and I was told that if you’re having trouble solving a problem like a math set or something and you go to sleep thinking about it you’re likely to figure it out in the morning - I don’t know if it ever worked for me but is an intriguing concept - as is the going outside one. This one I’ve felt recently, as I often forget to go outside but when it was super sunny the other day I went outside a lot and it really made me feel uplifted and so much more motivated. The mash-up, brainstorming and limitation tips are also helpful, and I feel like I can use them in the future when I’m possibly stuck.
Helen Maleenynoreply@blogger.com
