What I Did On My Christmas Vacation and What It Has To Do With The Tony Awards.

The Producer's Perspective: Could Broadway shows have screeners?

It has now become customary for most Broadway shows to invite the voters to come back to see the show a 2nd time after the Tony nominations are announced, especially if a show opens in the fall (as I wrote about here). But that’s hard for a lot of voters, especially during the spring, when there are gobs of new shows to see before the end of the season deadline.

So what if we sent videos?

Overall this article brings up an interesting idea but when it comes to the implementation, I think this article brings up an idea that is bad. For Tony voters, I think that providing screeners or recordings of the show wouldn't help shows be nominated more but just allow Tony voters to place miss informed votes on shows. The whole point of live theatre is that the audience is right there experiencing in the same space as the performers. This misinformation comes from the huge difference between seeing a show in person verse seeing a recording of the show, which is an idea that is downplayed by the author of this article. The article has one sentence about this difference. Even if the image shows the whole stage, one of my favorite parts of seeing a show is when the whole audience collectively gasps and being able to feel that collective emotion. Having Broadway shows give out screeners wouldn’t give the Tony voters the right picture of the show and could possibly skew the voting.
