Review Roundup: Did Critics Sing The Praises Of CHOIR BOY On Broadway?

www.broadwayworld.com: Make a joyful noise! Today, January 8, Manhattan Theatre Club's Broadway premiere of Choir Boy, written by Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney and directed by Drama Desk Award nominee Trip Cullman, opens at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.

For half a century, the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys has been dedicated to the education of strong, ethical black men. One talented student has been waiting for years to take his rightful place as the leader of the legendary gospel choir. But can he make his way through the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?

I am really excited to eventually see this musical in New York especially after reading this review and the concept of the story. You don't really see musicals like this taking up space like this on such a grand level anymore and its really refreshing to see something risky, original, and raw being put up in New York, it only makes me praise the Manhattan Theatre Club even more for the work they do. It would also be really exciting to see a Carnegie Mellon Drama classmate, Marcus Gladney, already acting near Broadway in only his sophomore year. The review is often times kind of critical towards the production, which actually excites me more than it disappoints me, simply because its a first try and a musical that captures black teen angst, and real topics like sexuality and race, is bound to be met with some criticism. I also am excited because it an example of how the theatre industry is beginning to change the narrative on how we portray black boys, its refreshing that this story is about black boys seen in a positive and dignified light compared to what has been produced before.
