Pipeline

Pittsburgh in the Round: The hopes and fears of parents multiply exponentially when your child is a young black man. Likewise statistics shared in City Theatre’s program support that black students (male and female) are more likely to be suspended from school at any age. Dominique Morisseau’s 2018 Obie-winning Pipeline at City tackles the challenges of black youth in varied educational settings.

The show Pipeline seems like a beautiful script in general and at the City Theatre where it’s currently playing seems to be achieving great success in it’s staging. The design elements pull the audience close to the actors and the events unfolding onstage with the thrust set. While other elements of the set and lighting design serve to enhance the story without announcing the grandeur of their design. Preforming and supporting shows like this in the current political climate is extremely important to try and share the injustices that are embedded within our system. It’s nice to see that the theatre community in Pittsburgh is making these stands against the hatred that is rampaging through America with the current administration. What I believe to be one of the powers of theatre as an artform is the exposure to stories that we may never have had an experience with but to be in an environment that harnesses such an intimacy that we can empathize with the stories in ways we couldn’t before.
