Kennywood Holiday Lights - A Christmas Tradition for Families

www.discovertheburgh.com: When it comes to Kennywood, Pittsburgh's nearest theme park, we often visit in the summer months to ride as many roller coasters and eat as many potato patch fries as we can stomach.

One thing we never experienced was the park's annual Holiday Lights display. So you know when our friends at Kennywood invited us to check them out that we jumped at the chance.

My roommates and I keep talking about going to Kennywood as we all love roller coasters. I figured our chance for this semester had passed when October came and went. How glad am I to see that Kennywood is open for the holidays! That said, turns out they close most if their coaster so I guess we will have to wait until next year. I worked at Six Flags this summer and it is impossible to fathom the amount of work that goes into events like this. Hanging lights actually begins, for Six Flags at least, during the crossover week between the summer season and Fright Fest. There are way more lights involved here it looks like and I can’t imagine how long it would take to get that done. Next time you’re at a theme park with holiday attractions, check out the trees. You’ll probably notice some sneaky string lights lingering from past years.

I wish back home I had something like this was I was younger, this sounds exactly like the kind of activity I would have enjoyed. With the rides and the lights and the food. I don’t know much about the activities in Pittsburgh around the holiday time, and I’ve been trying to learn more about the things to do here so reading this article was very helpful because this does sound like a very fun activity to do, although I do agree with what this article said about how this sounds like an activity that is more geared towards families with younger kids, but I think I would still have fun here because I really do enjoy looking at lights around the holiday time. My favorite thing around the holiday season is to go look at light displays around so I do think I would enjoy this. I also think going to this park, not in the winter might be better for me because the rollercoasters will be running so it might be more fun so people who aren’t little kids.

This attraction at Kennywood here in Pittsburgh reminds me exactly of something we had back at home in Los Angeles. Every year, the Los Angeles Zoo creates an absolutely beautiful holiday lighting attraction. Every year, the team who creates this holiday spectacular strings up millions of holiday lights. This spectacular, while made to be and actually being Christmas themed, is truly made for anyone who enjoys pretty things per say. That being said, like the article states about the Kennywood attraction, I would agree that the event is made more for little kids and their families. Back home, I enjoyed going to the attraction for a couple years here and there, but I would definitely get a little sick of it if I went too much. One thing that I think would be fun though would be getting to work on the installation team. Maybe one day I'll be working for a production company that does an event just like this.

Since moving to Pittsburgh, I have read a number of articles about Kennywood after the summer season. I love that they keep the park open for specific seasonal events like their Halloween theme park and now the Holiday lights. There is a similar event back home in South Carolina at the South Carolina State Zoo. They have a truly incredible holiday light display that no matter your age, is always fun to attend. The amount of work that must go into putting up these kinds of displays at Kennywood is staggering, I get tired putting holiday light up on my house let alone an entire theme park. I really appreciate the article for putting in photos of the attraction as well so the claims made in the article can be backed up with visuals. While the academic calendar of Carnegie Mellon does not have its student for much of December, I hope that I will be able to get to Kennywood to see these lights.
