The Birth of a Climate Commons

HowlRound Theatre Commons: On a weekend in June, I sat in a blackbox theatre for three days with a group of mostly strangers.

We talked. We ate. We laughed. We challenged. We listened.

I heard the same refrain over and over again those three days. Wow, I’m so happy to be with others for once. It’s nice to be… un-lonely.

This article ghosts across a pervasive issue with this type of broad-scale movement: it is only accessible to those who choose to engage with it. I think that many people in higher-profile, higher-budget positions are well aware of the crisis and are working towards improving the entertainment industry's sustainability. The trouble is with the vast array of individuals and companies that are less engaged with what is happening outside of their insular situations. I don't doubt that, given ready access to information and solutions, many people would jump at the opportunity. However, in my experience, the day-to-day crises of the entertainment industry tend to overwhelm considerations of sustainability. The wide-spread, creeping movement described in the article is certainly a step in the right direction, but 18 years will rush by pretty quickly.
