Another female leadership in the industry! I am so happy that Berkeley Repertory Theatre has announced their new female leadership. I always admire how Berkeley Rep reflects and cherishes its community with the carefully curated seasons that involve “rich diversity, [and] strong political opinions” as the Board President Stewart Owen puts it in the article, and wish Johanna Pfaelzer will continue that particular identity of the theater. Although I am confident that the Board of Directors must have done an excellent job picking the best candidate, I can’t help but reiterate what my colleague said about bringing in another person from New York instead of finding candidates within the Bay. Since her major connections are in New York, she will bring in more esteemed artists from New York rather than find the people from the Bay. In that line, I wish she could successfully introduce her connection to the community without losing the local base within the Bay.

I am really excited that Berkeley Repertory Theatre has a woman artistic director. I live right there and have seen some of their shows, and they are amazing. I can't wait to see what Johanna Pfaelzer does with her time at Berkely Rep but from what is said about her in the article, it will be great. In this age there are a lot more women in leadership positions than before and that is really exciting as it was and is such a male driven society. Theater used to be all males, and now it is nice to hear about women who are taking positions of power in theater. I hope that there is more movement toward hiring women in theater because they have amazing ideas and can do the work just like the men. I couldn't be more excited for Berkely Rep anc I can't wait to vist home and see one of their shows again.

Berkeley Rep! I am so glad to hear of my hometown regional theatre on the ptm blog. And on such an auspicious occasion, the hiring of a new female artistic director! The Berkeley Repertory Theatre has had a profound impact on my life and on my career as a theatre professional. In the middle of high school, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to choose theater as a career, having constructed the sets for our school productions and just started acting in our plays. I joined something called the berkeley rep teen council, which is a kind of club where kids interested in theatre can meet and see behind the scenes at berkeley rep shows and go see theatre around the bay area. I am so glad I was able to be a part of that little group and I have no doubt that it was the idea of one of the artistic directors at that organization to make it happen. In addition to the teen council, the productions put on at berkeley rep have always been at such a high caliber that inspired me to want to do the same. GO BAY AREA!
