Tony Nominations 2018: ‘Mean Girls,’ ‘SpongeBob,’ “Band’s Visit’ Lead

Observer: This year’s top Tony Award nominees came from Bikini Bottom, Bet Hatikva, Hogwarts and… a suburban high school.

Broadway’s top awards show spread the wealth this year, with seven shows reaching double digit nomination hauls.

I really enjoy the Tony awards. I am glad they brought back the sound designer awards. I am not glad about this push by AEA to award tonys to the best ensemble. The tony awards is not a community little league where everyone gets an award. If you are left out, then so be it, better luck next time. There seems to be this shift however to have shows that are based off of movies and tv shows. The body of work that is the lexicon of Americana seems to be being swallowed up by a show about a sponge from beneath the sea. I would rather see shows by some of the great American playwrights being revived instead of a musical about bullies in high school. It seems that more and more shows are becoming less and less about quality and more and more about trying to get audiences to New York. Considering that the majority of shows that were nominated this year are not selling out, I think it’s time for the Tony Awards to rethink the criteria.

I am so so pumped for this year’s tonys. I am and always will be in support of SpongeBob. I loved this show. I was very surprised about all the other Nominations though. Word of mouth about mean girls is that the show is not that good. I was very surprised to see that it got 12 nominations. Another surprise was that frozen only got three nominations. They had gone through so many different creative teams and the show was so hyped you would think it would be an amazing show. Sadly, it is not, Disney tried to hard to make it not like the movie and people really want to see the movie. I’m really excited to see who will win best actor in a play as all of the nominees are extremely talented. I love watching the tony awards and while this might not be the best season ever there are defiantly still some gems to watch out for!
