Rise: All the Ways NBC’s Show Is Different From ‘Drama High’

www.vulture.com: The new NBC series Rise is based on the book Drama High, Michael Sokolove’s account of the nationally respected theater program at Harry S. Truman High School in Levittown, Pennsylvania. As Rise creator Jason Katims recently explained, he used the book as “a jumping-off point” to tell a different story about the drama department at the fictional Stanton High School in fictional Stanton, Pennsylvania, a small town not dissimilar from Levittown.

When making a movie or even a stage adaptation of a book it is always interesting to see what the writers and the creators of the new adaptation will choose to remove or add. I think the choice to remove something from a move adaptation is a choice that should not be taken lightly. There are always fans of the books that are really looking forward to see their favorite stories on the big screen or the small screen, and they are often disappointed because things are missing and it’ not the same story that they fell in love with translated form the page to the screen. It bet writers of adaptations have their work cut out for them when an adaptation job crossed their desk. I’m curious how the conversation happens between the writer of the adaptation and the author of the book. How much input does the author have and how much input do the producers or the network get when it comes to the cuts and keeps of the story and character circumstances.
