Top 10 Costume Design Schools Revealed

Pret-a-Reporter: More than knowing how to thread a needle, costume design involves historical research, collaboration with actors and directors, keen attention to detail, the art of narrative storytelling through clothes … and that's just the beginning. A bachelor's (B.A.) or master's in fine arts (MFA) can give a leg up. (Although some, like Jacqueline Durran, who won an Oscar in 2013 for her work in Anna Karenina, do not major in costume design.)

I find articles like these ones interesting. You get to see the rank of schools and why. What’s different about this one is instead of just being a list; it gives you a little snippet at the top. I really liked this as it attested to costume design and a but about its importance. It let us know why only briefly and in just enough detail to understand. Then it gave the reasons for each school as they were listed. This is why I like these articles. The reasons why they ranked this school as a top ten is always intriguing as it defines what makes the school standout or what the school has produced from it with its students. It tells you about the program. I find this fun as you get to understand what makes the schools different and why one might be better than another. This is all based on their criteria, so that needs to be kept in mind. Overall, a great article and a fun read about each school.

Articles like these always intrigue me. First off who has the authority to say what is a good school and what is not a good school. But it also raises the question of how does one decide what a good school is and what a bad school is. Is it the professors who work there? Is it the Alumni that comes out of it? Is it who has the most money? There are a lot of schools on this list that I do agree have fantastic costume programs such as UNCSA and obviously Yale. I feel like this list is too short and does not provide a lot of information. However, I do love seeing Carnegie Mellon on these lists as it always helps. When your school gets added to more and more of these lists people start to talk and this will help when searching for a job. CMU for the win!
