Space, the Final Frontier: Sokoloff Is On To Something Big

www.clydefitchreport.com: Robin Sokoloff doesn’t wait. The NYC-based executive director-dancer-choreographer-producer needed a space for her own performances and for those of her friends — many of them women and minorities. She has built not one, but two venues, utilized by thousands of people in the arts. And with her second space, she may be on the verge of redefining the business model for creating new work.

This space sounds amazing. I think it really interesting that Town Stages does not plan on taking money from anyone willing to give and is only planning on taking money without certain strings attached. I wonder what specific strings that are looking at. I agree that who is giving the money is important and I think it speaks to the values of everyone in charge, especially Sokoloff. I hope that her business model of renting to companies at a profit and subsidize at a reduced price works out. In addition, I wonder is they will be selective on who they rent the space to, based on where the money is coming from. Overall this sounds like an amazing concept. I hope that Sokoloff is able to keep the place running and encourage other people across the country to open similar places. Maybe Sokoloff’s success will encourage others to pave their own way.
