Humans pretended to be monsters for Monster Hunter World’s motion capture

The Verge: Capcom’s Monster Hunter World features incredibly realistic fantastical beasts, as the developers were able to take advantage of new, more powerful technologies compared to past games. One of those technologies was motion capture — but in place of actual monsters to capture, humans had to play pretend.

I've seen some of the older 3D modeled Monster Hunter games in the past, and reading this article and seeing the videos is really exciting! While past games has had pretty nice graphics, overall the movements are stiff compared to the human counterparts, which people are more used to animating and hove more reference to. Motion capture is such an interesting way to fix that problem - while it isn't the most obvious, it makes sense to use real living things to create the movements you want.

I ADORE motion capture technology, and all the fully animated movies I've seen using it - Mars Needs Moms and The Adventures of Tin Tin being the two I can think of off the top of my head - have stunning movement wether or not they're animated realistically. The ability to take motion and record it no visually but quite literally the whole movement of the body is stunning and has so many possible applications not only for animation but for automation and giving robots more realistic motions.
