Exhalations Dance Theatre weighs in on technology’s impact on humanity in its latest production, Kinetic Emotion

Dance + Live Performance | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: Inventor and author R. Buckminster Fuller once said, “Humanity is acquiring all the right technology for all the wrong reasons.” Whether you believe that, or think technology is humanity’s savior, or its eventual executioner, or something else, that debate continues to inspire artists’ works worldwide. Exhalations Dance Theatre weighs in on that topic in its latest production, Kinetic Emotion, Feb. 17 and 18 at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater.

I have only very recently been exposed to the world of dance as a storytelling vessel, with the most eye opening event being Dancelight. I think it is very interesting to use a heavy amount of integrated technology is in dance performances about the dangers and harm of technology. It almost seems ironic. Almost. Technology in the world of art is very important, especially in theatre, and its addition to artwork usually enhances it. Projection mapping with moving bodies always amazes me. It seems, just based on the one photo and the description of the event, that there is some pretty intense projection mapping incorporated into these dances. Human projection mapping is ridiculously hard because of the complicated shapes of the body and adding a kinetic element makes it even harder. Everything has to be timed perfectly for the magic to be seamless. I would be interested in seeing how effective these dances are at conveying the meanings and messages described in this article.
