Tarana Burke, Other Activists Issue Statement on Their Golden Globes Appearance

I was very happy that these activists were able to be at the golden globes. Organizers do a lot of emotional work on the daily and as we have seen recently with the death of Erica Garner, that can take a real physical toll on the body.
However, I think that the way that the Golden Globes handled having these guests around was a publicity nightmare. These activists were all on the arms of rich and powerful white women. The activists ended up coming off like accessories. When Tarana Burke was being interviewed they zoomed away from her to show the red carpet look of an actress.
Considering the questionable people who won awards on the show, I think these activists were incredibly disrespected. Many of the men who were given the platform to speak and even win awards were abusers themselves.
I think these activists appearing on this award show is very bittersweet. It's ultimately just another shallow attempt to try to convince everyone that Hollywood is changing. I sincerely hope that next year they will truly stop honoring men who have been accused of sexual violence and start honoring the stories that women directors.
