TechShop Closes Doors, Files Bankruptcy

makezine.com: It is with a very sad heart and deep disappointment that I announce that TechShop is shutting down its operations effective November 15 and will file for bankruptcy under Chapter-7. In spite of many months of effort to restructure the company’s debt and raise new capital to fund our recently announced strategic pivot, we have depleted our funds. We are left with no other options.

It is sad to see a company like TechShop go under. It was a good idea that I believe still has potential as a business. I think where they began to fall short is when the “maker” Technology became so readily available to consumers. Much of what your average consumer is looking for can be found at your local Staples for under 1000 dollars.

CNC technology is continually evolving and as more people begin to buy into it the cheaper it will get. I remember a few years back when you could pay upwards of 3,000 dollars for a 3D printer that today would run you about 300. I’m waiting for the day when 3D printers are more accessible than your average inkjet printer would be more expensive. Every kid in America will soon be asking for a 3d printer to put next to their Smartphones.

To be honest, innovation like this is really something to be excited about and although TechShop, one of the founders of the Makerspace, has left, I feel that people will continue to innovate and create for many years to come.
