Stories like this are tragic. I’m not sure what could have prevented this accident. Typically, people don’t think of fall hazards at heights like this one – five feet. Not knowing more about the specific set up and circumstances surrounding the fall, I can’t speak to any kind of neglect, but it doesn’t sound like the case. Sometimes accidents do happen. While five feet doesn’t sound like much of a fall, it is – especially if you hit your head on a hard surface. Not to sound cruel, but this also appears to be someone older, he retired from working with the VA. As people get older, injuries tend to be more severe and recovery takes longer and one may not even make a full recovery. As people are continuing to work longer, we need to be more careful about the type of work performed, especially if it is physically demanding work.
