Centering an Object Inside a Rectangle: Tuesday Tips With Heidi

AutoCAD Blog | Autodesk: There are many times you may want to center a circle, text, or other geometry within a rectangle. It’s easy to draw an object at the center of a rectangle using the Geometric Center object snap.

As always, theses AutoCAD tips start me off on a tangent through the Autodesk website perusing tips, tricks, and videos across multiple projects. In the end, what I find is I know nothing about CAD in relation to all there is to know about CAD. There are some incredible products out there, all of which, for the most part, specialize in something particular. Even the programs that I feel pretty comfortable in have elements that I have never heard of before and don’t fully know how to use. What I would love is five weeks with nothing to do where I can just watch every Lynda video available on AutoCAD, Fusion, Inventor, SolidWorks, maybe even vector works…(better be soon before I lose my free subscription). I also want to read every Autodesk blog post, watch every Lynn Allen video and even read the manuals for the different programs. Maybe then, I will have a better understanding of all the capabilities of the different programs that I will probably spend the rest of my life using.

I haven’t spent a lot of time using parametric constraints in AutoCAD. For much of the drawing that I do – it may not be all that useful. The previous tip – about resizing a rectangle from a corner grip and keeping it a rectangle is extremely useful, but only if it can be applied to all rectangles. If there is a system setting to automatically apply this type of autoconstraint to all new rectangles, I’d be all for it. I’ve often said that one of the things I hate about AutoCAD is that it doesn’t deal with rectangles the same way most every other program I’ve used does – including Word. The parametric constraints could be useful, but I also see them being overwhelming when looking at a drawing. Another way around the problem proposed in this tip is to resize the rectangle around the center. Granted this would involve a few more steps, it doesn’t involve any additional commands.

As it turns out, I used this command yesterday. Although I still think there are many flaws in the Auto CAD snapping feature I did find this one to be extremely useful. I think this tool just comes down to being a massive time saver. Normally I would have to draw a construction line and find the center of that but with this tool, it is 2 simple clicks between the midpoint and your moving. I also think this tool would be very helpful when it comes to 3D drawing. It is quite often where I find that there are too many snaps to find the center of the object but this allows the user to select the specific boundaries of an object. This all being said I don’t see myself moving to Auto CAD. The one major take away from this article is that every drafting program as its strengths.
