Sexual harassment in theatre won’t end until it’s everyone’s problem

Exeunt Magazine: Over the past few days, the #MeToo posts have piled up. They prove what everyone knows but no one really wants to deal with: that women and young men live with the threat of sexual harassment, and that it happens in nice arty jobs too, even (or perhaps especially) in the theatre, where everyone gets drunk together, physical boundaries are blurred, and there’s no HR department to go to when things get nasty.

The statements made in this article are true, although while reading it I could not help but wish that it’s author would get to the point as it seemed a rather round about approach. The straight cut answer is that in the world (not just theatre) sexual harassment will not end until the people of the world discover a few things. First, they must learn to recognize the many forms of sexual harassment and abuse. Second, they must believe that sexual harassment and abuse is unacceptable in any form. And third, they must believe that they deserve better and take a stand against anyone who violates any of this. So many offenders go unknown because those who they hurt do not know who to turn to or fear the consequences of turning in their offender. If we can help to create a world in which there is no tolerance and where there is safety is stepping forward there will be a greater impact for good then can be comprehended.
