Innovative New Playscape Designs by MONSTRUM Appear in Playgrounds Around the World

Colossal: For the last several years, Danish design firm MONSTRUM (previously) has constructed wildly imaginative playscape features for playgrounds around the world with an intense focus on both artistic and architectural quality. The playgrounds are designed and built locally in their large studio just outside Copenhagen and then shoppied in components to sites around Denmark, Sweden, Russia, and even Dubai.

I adore these pieces not just for their imaginative themes or the fact that they're incredible playgrounds, but for how closely they nailed the childlike wonder a playground brings into their themes. While their theatrical background definitely lent itself to building large functional wooden 'sets', it goes deeper than that. Theatrically looking at these, they would still be incredible, but making them into playgrounds adds an energy to them that you can feel even without children around it. It's an air of possibility and excitement, pushed on by their bright use of color and the creative slatting on their designs that make things almost look real... but still clearly made of wood. I think working in theater opens your mind to things like this: bright, colorful, childlike imagination. Theater allows and encouraged you to retain that, and these playgrounds show just how much you can do if you keep your creativity intact.

This got a bit rambling, so in summary: These are cool. I think they show clear theater and set influence. Theater background is what allowed these to be so creative and so well crafted at the same time.

I totally agree with Sarah. These playgrounds are so vibrant with childlike energy, they exude their own magic. As someone who has done a fair amount of scenic design and construction, there must have been so much thought put into each creation. Not only does the playground have to keep to a theme and be kid friendly, but it also has to be structurally capable of holding children and safe for all the clambering and activity that happens in and around it. AND if you go to the company website and click through all the different playgrounds have their own story concept that inspires the theme!! This is totally in a set designer's niche, and is such a good use of skills to give something so amazing back to the community.
