Atom’s New 3D Printer Offers FDM and SLA Capabilities

makezine.com: Every so often a new idea comes forward that makes you wonder how this hasn’t been done before. The latest to come across our desk was Layer One’s Atom 3 3D Printer. No longer must you sit and fret, having to choose between committing your money to a proven FDM workhorse, or throwing caution and your hard earned bankroll into the SLA ring. The Atom 3 promises both technologies in one sleek machine, just not quite yet as the expected shipping date won’t be until some point next year. In the meantime, we will have to pontificate based on the available information, some impressive renders, a healthy dose of optimism, and, yes, a dash of skepticism.

3-d Printing is such an interesting and ever growing field for the entry level to semi-professional printers. This idea of combining SLA and FDM printing into one machine is something that I personally find very intriguing with the ability to do two different types of printing on one platform. This is something that seems extremely challenging and hard to fit into one form factor although if at all possible while keeping it to a relatively low cost I think will change the 3-d printing game and the entry level of printers especially for educational purposes. Allowing people to explore the two different 3-d printing styles. The ability to learn and experience two different styles and techniques so that students and makers can have experience in their field.
