Stage review: Pittsburgh CLO delivers a new 'Newsies' that pulses with energy

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: It was a David-and-Goliath story a newsman should have loved: A gutty army of street urchins brings New York to a standstill and a tyrant to his knees.

Publisher Joseph Pulitzer would have loved it. Except those urchins were the kids who delivered his newspapers. They were on strike, and he was the tyrant who tried demanding a few precious cents from their pockets.

As we are getting ready to go see Newsies at the moment, it is wonderful to hear such praise from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. On top of it being a wonderful show, it is so fun to see CMU alumni take the stage. Even more interesting is in looking at the costume designer, out Pre-College costuming teacher, Tia. I love seeing CMU alumni in the real world as I hope to be one of them. I can't wait to see Newsies being put on at the Benedum but the Pittsburgh CLO.

My siblings and I took my mom to see Newsies last night for her birthday. We were absolutely blown away! My mom and I both love dance-heavy shows, specifically with tap dancing, and Newsies was a perfect match for us. I was glad I finally got to see the show in person instead of imagining it while listening to the cast album on Pandora. The songs Seize the Day and King of New York were full of contagious energy that had my mom dancing in her seat, and I was in a complete trance during the tap number in King of New York. The set mainly consisted of three fire escapes on moving platforms. I really enjoyed how they used those platforms for multiple settings in the show. I also liked how the LD used backlight to create a very dramatic shadow on the stage through the fire escapes during Something to Believe In. The show overall was packed with talent and energy. I would definitely see it again.

Personally, I think that the article over-hypes the show. I think it was good and a very fun show to watch, but not the most amazing thing that blew my mind away. I though the dancing and the sets were really good, however other technical aspects were not as up to par as I expected from a professional theater company. However, away from the negative I think that it was really cool to see someone from CMU onstage, as well as kids from the local arts schools. Giving students the opportunity to perform in professional theater is something rare, unless you are very young. Teens are not really part of many shows as baby-faced adults take the roles. So I thought that CLO gave people a lot of opportunity to grow and explore as a performer which made the show more interesting. Not necessarily visually (although having actual teens did make it more accurate), but just in the way the show was run and produced.
