'The King and I' comes to Pittsburgh as a classic in the best sense

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: “The King and I” starts big, as a steamship glides into the harbor of Bangkok against a fiery red sky. Afterwards, this national tour production refines its visuals — some ornate columns here, the overhead branches of a willow tree there.

Yet the emotional impact keeps expanding, as the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic infuses the musical with subjects such as autocracy, slavery, East-West culture clashes and the lowly status of women.

The king and I is amazing! I am so excited that a production of this scale and value is coming through to pittsburgh. Recently, I have noticed most of the touring shows have been new shows rather than your classic musical theatre i.e.: Hedwig, Fun Home, and Finding Neverland, The Book of Mormon. I always love seeing revivals because I like being able to experience the reinvention/reimagination of the piece. I was lucky enough to see the Revival Broadway Cast of The King and I with Kelli O'Hara. Every year on Broadway we see many revivals, however, this particular one has the energy and passion to relive a classic tale. I hope that I am able to see this touring company.
