Introducing the AutoCAD 35 Under 35 Young Designers List

AutoCAD Blog | Autodesk: In December, the AutoCAD team will officially celebrate 35 years of software created to help you design the world from the ground up. Inspired by our past and engineered for the future, AutoCAD is here to make sure you have the tools you need to build anything you can imagine. Our software has been instrumental in designing some of the world’s most beautiful, groundbreaking, and innovative products and buildings, and now we’re looking forward to seeing how the next generation of creators uses it. With that in mind, we’re proud to announce the AutoCAD 35 Under 35 young designers list.

Two things struct me first when reading this article in relationship to its title. Firstly, there are not 35 which I thought was odd. This was just the first five people featured for this year. They wrote that there would be more released throughout the year. Although that is perhaps done for PR reasons, I think it would have more effect if they would have released all 35 at one time. That aside, I loved that they selected people from all different fields who use AutoCAD in vastly different ways. By doing this, it demonstrates the multi-facetted nature of AutoCAD. I never knew CAD had music or artistic capabilities. By promoting those who do all sorts of work with CAD, they promote their own brand. Another thing that was kind of off to me about the campaign was that they were under 35, which I get for the anniversary, but I feel like younger generations are often more recognized for CAD than those senior simply because of being the “technology generation”. I think the campaign could of had a wider reach if they just did 35 featured people for CAD’s 35 year anniversary.

Well, there’s not 35, but aside from that this article is interesting on many levels. AutoCAD is the type of product that can be used in so many different ways. It’s really cool for AutCAD to be recognizing that it’s not just engineers using their products. This list was pretty diverse, including an artist, some designers, a project manager, and engineers. It’s really smart for AutoCAD because they can expand their user-base beyond the typical CAD user. It’s also very cool that this is featuring young, up and coming CAD users. I wish the profiles would have been a little more detailed, going into how exactly they use AutoCAD to its fullest. Instead, the profile just talked a bit generally on what their profession is. It’s just that AutoCAD is such an varied, multi-functional product that some insight on how different industries use that to their advantage could be really helpful.

As other's have stated, a little bit of a poor word choice when they created the title. Looks like this is an ongoing project so hopefully there'll be 35 at some point. In terms of the 5 mentioned with their titles, all I can think about is how many different types of artists, designers, engineers, makers, and thinkers use AutoCAD software. Especially people like Morcillo who uses it to create art--like what the hell? The most I've created in AutoCAD is a house with a tree and a happy sun. Furthermore, I remember the units lesson in AutoCAD when Boevers went through the entire list of available units you can measure in including the usual feet, inches, the superior metric system....and parsecs, light years, and microns. Yeah let me just build my set in light years. This just really makes you think the type of work someone in another building on campus or across the globe is doing. Although it's not rocket science (sometimes), it's cool that scenic design and drafting have their own little world in the AutoCAD universe.
