Cutting-Edge Entertainment: CMU Heads to South by Southwest

www.cmu.edu/news: Carnegie Mellon University faculty, staff and students will once again participate in South by Southwest (SXSW), the premier annual entertainment and technology festival, March 10-16 in Austin, Texas.

"SXSW is a forum for thought leaders in film, music and technology to meet every year," said Jon Nehlsen, associate dean of Partnerships and Communication Strategy at CMU's Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. "At CMU, we have quite a bit to say about all three of those things, and it's important that we participate, both to alert the world to what we do and to help shape the ongoing dialog."

This convention sounds really incredible. I have always thought about theater and engineering having a give and take. Theater artists will you any kind of technology or machinery they can get their hands on from the STEM world, and when their is something we want to do, but have no easy means, we push the STEM world to create it. I think conventions like this, and even the master programs that I did not know our school had, are so great to keep the dialogue going between the two worlds. I do wish this was something brought more into the undergrad and drama community more, as I find it incredibly interesting and I am sure some of my peers would agree. The last bit in the article about Pittsburgh transportation and creating a smarter way to run public transit efficiently is really a good project, I just did not know much about, and I will probably look more into it. As annoying as waiting for a bus can be, or the transit app crashing, I would be interested to learn about the process that made it the way it is today, and see if it really is something that should be pushed to a wider audience.
