Autodesk, I think we need to talk…

Complete 3D Concepts: I know we have only been in a direct committed relationship for the last 4 years, so it probably doesn’t mean much to you. However I was working for other companies that were in committed relationships with you for about 6 or 7 years prior to that. So really we have been in the same circle of friends for at least 10 years. Even when working on a site for a client where we had to predominantly use your competitors software, you were never far from my thoughts and I couldn’t wait to get back to using you full time again and was elated when I could.

I share so many of the same feelings that the author has, not just about Autodesk, but about every company that's adopting this style in regards to their programs. Adobe did this a few years back, and tons of people, much like the author of this article, owners of small businesses who relied on Adobe's products, complained. Because as much as many people would love to get the newest piece of software every time it comes out, it's just not reasonable, and frankly hardly necessary. AutoCAD has had a bunch of new additions in the past few years, but if I had actually paid for the package, I wouldn't have paid again--the changes just aren't significant enough. So to me, this seems like a great way for AutoDesk to gouge out every last penny from their consumers. Of course they want to make money, but to me as a college student, who most likely will not have anywhere near a 6-figure job, and a payment system like this for me would put me out so much money. Most consumers already pay huge monthly fees for things like cell service, internet, and utilities, I don't think software needs to be a part of that. While I see why companies would be interested in this model, I just don't think it works for the consumer in any way.
