Oscar Watch 2017: Behind the Make-up of 'Suicide Squad'

makeupmag.com: As the tagline says, “Worst. Heroes. Ever.” Turning the typical comic book-based movie on its head, Suicide Squad focuses on a government agency that recruits imprisoned supervillains for a series of off-the-book black ops in return for clemency. Directed by David Ayer (Fury), it stars Will Smith (Deadshot), Jared Leto (The Joker), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller, the government’s no-nonsense recruiter).

Ok… I am a little conflicted. Only a little because I definitely don’t think that Sucide Squad should have won the Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling, but for the crocodile, and ONLY, the crocodile, do I see why they were nominated. As I calmed my frustration, I compared the pictures makeup of Suicide Squad and Star Trek: Beyond, side by side, and came of with the same resolution… STAR TREK SHOULD HAVE WON! (and yes, I’m letting this be my ranting comment). Just because you have one single great makeup design for a character that isn’t really the spotlight, doesn’t mean the makeup for the whole film is amazing. Even looking in this article, most of the pictures are of Joker and Harley (big surprise…-__-), with close up of the Crocodile repeated twice! I know they had the hard task of first, making the makeup of the joker New and Exciting and Stood out, but really the only reason it was “rememberable” was because it looks like they just stuck any tattoo and its mom on his face and body, and don’t get me started on Harley Quinn. There are so many awesome and cool designs for Harley, but this one (even though it isn’t necessarily bad), it isn’t unique or creative (it is just the blue/pink version of the Arkham Knight game Harley Quinn, with some smeared makeup to make you look “Edgy” and “crazy”). I think one of the appeals of Harley Quinn is the fact that (in a lot of versions at least), her look is simple, but it is her actions and behavior that truly show her insanity: not this “OH LOOK AT ME! I’M CLEARLY INSANE AND DANGEROUS” look they movie went with instead. The reason I think that Star Trek should of won, at least a one of the reason, is because if you look up any of the side alien characters in the overall world of the movie, example the alien Chekov was flirting with, the design and makeup is so detailed and beautiful adding realness to this Science Fiction world. JUST FOR THAT ALIEN SIDE (NO NOT EVEN SIDE) BACKGROUND CHARACTER, STAR TRECK SHOULD HAVE WON… ok, I’m done ranting…
