How Tarell Alvin McCraney's Yale School of Drama application became 'Moonlight'

LA Times: The story of "Moonlight" began long before director Barry Jenkins' involvement propelled the film to eight Academy Award nominations. In fact, it began in 2003 while then budding-playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney was applying to grad school.

McCraney's development from writing the first version of "Moonlight" as a Yale SoD application essay to having this produced as an award-winning film is phenomenal. This film is uniquely one of a kind, and conveys so many important themes and messages. McCraney's story of "Moonlight" and it's eventual production is inspiring, and makes me happy that powerful art can be brought to the public's attention some way or another. This is why I believe it is so important to support local artists, encourage people to express themselves through art, music, dancing, acting, etc, and to encourage people to share their art. McCraney's efforts to get "Moonlight" filmed and produced have not only culminated in an amazing film, but he has caused the general public to address issues and concepts that are often swept under the rug. Hopefully McCraney's odd path to success can inspire others within the art community and elsewhere!
