Chicago’s 2nd Floor Rear Festival Celebrates DIY Art Spaces of All Kinds

#50StatesofArt - Creators: A weekend-long DIY festival titled 2nd Floor Rear showcases apartment galleries, migrant projects, and experimental collaborations taking place in various Chicago neighborhoods. From art in cars and handbags to wandering theater, walking performances, and unauthorized public art installations, the festival helps underfunded and under-appreciated alternative spaces get some exposure.

Lesser-known and experimental artists truly get the light shone upon them in this festival. What is the point of art if not to make you question everything about your life? What you believe in, what your purpose is, (and, in the case of an amazing exhibit currently at the Carnegie Museum of Art) how is a tub of beans this cool? Experimental art is often frowned upon or pushed to the edges of our community. Too many artists and audiences feel unnerved by art and experiences they might not understand that break the very familiar rules of storytelling. Many artist who specialize in these rebellious art forms often curb themselves and mostly produce art that is more obedient and more likely to be appreciated by the common viewer. But history and culture have never gotten anywhere on playing it safe or maintaining the status quo. So keep being weird. Keep waking your roommates up at 3:24 in the morning with blaring rock music as you compose an 18 foot long painting (I love my roommate). I’m happy that this festival exists to encourage the creation of strange new art.
