What is NAMM and Why Does It Matter?

Reverb: If you spend any amount of time following music gear Facebook pages, blogs, or magazines, you'll probably see “NAMM” mentioned a lot in over the next week or two. For us in the business, NAMM is a totally ubiquitous experience and industry focal point. But if you’re just a casual gear fan and musician, you might be wondering what this whole NAMM thing is all about anyway.

I was really excited to see that there was an article about NAMM in the blog because it is something that I have heard about and followed for a few years, but nobody ever knew what I was talking about outside of my cohorts in the DJ community. It is a huge weekend for product releases — as the article said — especially from Roland, Numark, Akai, Rane, and other large profile DJ organizations. This year has been super fun for me to follow because a lot of my friends are performing at booths for organizations and some really cool new products are coming out from some new companies and in support for the two new large movements in DJing: portablism and Thre3 Style. Portablism is bringing new compact devices to the market, as well as new accessories to catalyze the movement. Thre3 Style stems from the Red Bull competition and is taking the Native Instruments idea of live remixing into a format which can not only be conducted through Serato, but in a Serato context which is far more open format than Traktor.
