Video games are fun, but Games For Change believes they can be so much more

Salon.com: Susanna Pollack, the president of Games for Change, came into Salon’s studio to chat about how this often-maligned medium can actually be a positive force for social change.

Video games are inherently educational, Pollack pointed out, because the whole point of them is to learn new skills and work on them until the player masters them. But Games for Change moves beyond the basics, promoting the potential of video games to teach social skills, educate about topics like world history, or improve empathy.

I absolutely agree with this article. Growing up, I played many video games, but they were not the traditional games that were marketed to children about playing dress up, or shooting games. They were on how to cook, learn grammar, or a different language. It was a platform for my young education and I do believe that it made a difference in my ability to learn. If studies are able to link violent video games to traumatic events, then why can not the opposite be true? It makes enough sense. Educational, morally based games, may change our technologically driven generation. When I was 12 years old, no one had a flip phone, let alone a smartphone that they were glued to. In our generation, it is not abnormal for a 9 year old to walk down the street clutching an iphone. We are steadily advancing technologically, so I think that we ought to use that advance for good, for positive purposes. Education and old school morals must grow with our society.
