Sonia Friedman: 'I tried and failed so many times to stage Dreamgirls'

WhatsOnStage.com: At rehearsals for the show she said: "I tried so many times and failed," before explaining how she managed to get a one-night concert version on at the Haymarket in Leicester. "We had a small, privileged group of people who heard and saw the musical."

I wish this article was longer because I don't think we talk about failure as critically as we could in theater. The work that a lot of us do is very challenging at times, and it's hard to make a great show every time. Sometimes, you have to cut your losses, because you know that, like any other show, it's going to open and it's going to close and you're going to get through it. But what happens when the problem stem from a deeper, more creative route. It's one thing to have a bad costume, but it's another to have a bad concept. This is where the director really becomes a pivotal role in the production- they have to sell it in order to get their team on board with them. And that's difficult and doesn't always work. In the instance of Dreamgirls, I can understand how Friedman struggled with the production; it's an iconic show and it's hard to deviate from the original concept. I bet that she felt trapped within her art- trying to tell the story of the play all while maintaining her own artistic integrity.
