‘Rock of Ages’ leaving the Rio on New Year’s Day

Las Vegas Review-Journal: “Rock of Ages,” the city’s pre-eminent (and only) musical celebration of ’80s rock, mullets and such libations as Bartles & Jaymes wine coolers, announced it is closing Jan. 1. The musical opened for previews at Venetian in November 2012, moving to the Rio in the former Crown Theater (and, before that, Club Rio) in January.

I have a fairly limited knowledge of all the musicals that have existed as a production in Las Vegas, but I feel fairly confident saying that “Rock of Ages” is the most fitting musical to ever hit the Strip. I have seen the show before and immediately thought that crowds in Vegas would love it, and they obviously did for four years, which given my limited knowledge feels like a good run in Vegas. I would love to study how shows get planned in Vegas and how that is different than Broadway. My guess is that it might be fairly similar. There are large amounts of shows that want to perform there, but there are only so many venues. It is interesting to hear that some shows are closing because they are not selling well. I imagine that this is because people want to see larger and larger shows in Vegas. It’s not that unreasonable to call Rock of Ages a big show, however when you compare it to Cirque’s numerous productions, it doesn’t really stand up well.
