Optoma launches Projection Mapper with competition to transform any space

ETNow.com: Homeowners and businesses, DJs and party planners can transform any space with Optoma’s ingenious new app: Projection Mapper.

It will project onto any surface in the home, retail space, party venue or event to completely transform the look and feel of the space. People can achieve at home, that impressive projection mapped experience you only ever see at large events. And with Halloween and Christmas around the corner, it is a great time to give it a try.

This an interesting article to look at because normally I wouldn't be interested in media design when doing my comments. However, with the start of my media mini, I've become a little more familiar with the practice and find this really cool! I think this company is going to go big with their creation because when I came into media, it all seemed (and still seems) extremely complex and complicated. The concepts of analog vs. digital, the different connectors, the way programs work, the way projection mapping works, and all these concepts were really tricky for me to grasp (and i'm still working on it). However, this product can really simplify the media design & projection process for ordinary people. I know it mentions Christmas and Halloween time, boasting that this product can be used by homeowners to decorate their house. In addition, you don't need any board or complex computer program to use these because the app is right on your phone (and hopefully easy to use?). I'm not completely familiar with advanced options of this product but I feel like it's better for just homeowners and business owners. Professional theaters, companies, DJs, and party planners might want to stick to something more advanced but if you are an amateur in any of these fields, this can still be a great option.

Projection mapping is pretty cool, easy projection mapping is really cool. I’m withholding judgement until I see it in action on if this is actually what it claims to be but if it is I can see it being really cool. It brings the power of mapping right into the slightly above average consumer’s hands. What I would really like to see however is for projection mapping to actually take a cue from the self driving car industry. SIDE NOTE: ISN’T IT COOL WE HAVE ONE OF THOSE NOW. Specifically however the push for self driving car’s has led to some really cool innovations in lidar, essentially a short range radar device that uses light waves outside the visual spectrum to create an incredibly accurate and detailed point map of a space. While a little pricey it’s certainly not obscene anymore and for the ability to completely and accurately develop a 3d map of a room I think it would be worth it so that our projectors could simply need to be aligned and scaled correctly to be mapped perfectly, even to highly irregular surfaces.

While a projection mapping app seems like an interesting concept, I don't understand why Optoma wants to break into that market. Maybe I am out of the loop, but are people really plugging their mobile devices into projectors frequently enough to make that the market? Mostly I am wondering why Optoma decided to make their software a mobile app, when there is a huge market for easy to use projection mapping software that runs on a computer. Of course, maybe they have a really cool compelling reason, but in that case why would they make it hard to find out more information about the app. I tried looking it up and had trouble finding anything else about it.
