Lucasfilm Suing Lightsaber Academy, The New York Jedi for Star Wars Trademark Infringements

Hit & Run : Reason.com: Lucasfilm, a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company and the creator and producer of the Star Wars film, has filed a federal lawsuit over intellectual property infringement against the proprietor of the Lightsaber Academy, which describes itself as "a consortium for academic, stage combat, and sport dueling lightsaber instructors" and the New York Jedi, "a community of Cosplayers, martial artists and teachers, who share practical Stage Combat techniques oriented toward Light Sabers."

I always cringe when I see lawsuits about copyright infringement because those case can become messy. I always question how much someone changes a logo can they get away with saying it is their own work and not copied off of the “original” logo. I wouldn’t want to be in Lightsaber Academy because I am sure they will lose a lot of money because of it. Whether they win the lawsuit or not they will definitely lose customers because who wants to work with a company that fought against the people who make the star wars films? I wouldn’t want to be associated with that. It is sad to say that we live in a time where people fight for their property all the time because people steal all the time. If you repeatedly asked for the right to start this company and they said no then don’t do it. Or you will be stuck with bills on bills of money you can’t pay because you can’t compete with a multi-million dollar company.

Star Wars is probably one of the largest cult followings if not the largest to capture the fans of the film, and have them follow it for years upon years. Of course there is going to want to be some sort of fan made films or workshops that are based off the movie. But I guess if you aren’t going to protect your logo from the little guys, there’s no stopping all sorts of people that have the desire to be like the icons they look up to whether good or bad. We only here about the major corporations and their defense of their logos because the little guys it is just a civil suit. There isn’t as much money riding on a particular brand that doesn’t have Disney, Starbucks, or Apple attached to the name. It is a little more difficult to do things with cars’ designs; but when you have as much money in a logo, you’ve got to hop on your horse and go for the firing line to keep others at bay.
