Emma Rice to step down as artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe

Carousel, News | The Stage: Emma Rice is to step down as artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe in April 2018, after the board decided the venue should return to more traditional staging.

Rice took up the post in April this year, and will have held the position for two years when she leaves. She introduced a revamped lighting rig to the theatre, alongside a new sound system.

When I saw the title of this article, my first thought was, “Didn’t she just recently become the artistic director?” I’m sad that she is leaving so soon, and I can’t help but worry that the reasons she is leaving aren’t actually the official reasons. Assuming they are, I suppose it makes sense that she would leave if what she wants doesn’t align with what The Globe wants, but it seems like they should’ve known what her overall vision would be before they selected her for the position. Also, if The Globe knew they wanted to stay true to Shakespeare’s time, why did they give Rice the go ahead to spend money on the new lighting and sound systems? If that is a key part of their mission, those decisions would’ve obviously not aligned with the mission as soon as they were proposed. Overall, I suspect this situation is more complicated than Rice or The Globe are presenting it.
