The Perks of Student Health Centers You May Not Know About

lifehacker.com: Depending on where you go to college, there’s a good chance you shell out good money every semester for student health services. Those services and on-campus clinics include more than just quick visits with a nurse or doctor. You usually get loads of other benefits you’ll want to take advantage of.

It's nice to know that other schools have wonderful "free" health services for their students. However, based on my experiences here and stories my friends have told me of their schools, I think that most campus health services have many faults that need to be improved upon before they start thinking about free vaccines and testing. I know several people in our class have been turned away from health services at CMU, told to stop complaining and take some Tylenol for that chest pain, when, in reality, they had a serious medical problem. I have a friend at the University of Michigan who was turned away from health services when she had a concussion. This summer, my sister's roommate was ignored by the Naval Academy's health services. She only managed to see the doctor on call after 3 days of trying to get an appointment and was running a fever of 104 degrees. She was then hospitalized for pneumonia. It's great that colleges are providing free condoms and basic services, but they need to step up their game and actually treat students when they are sick.
