Environmental Art Project to Light Up Pittsburgh Bridge for the Holidays

The 412 - July 2016: uch has been written about the iconic nature of Pittsburgh's three Sister bridges that connect the North Shore to the Golden Triangle. In addition to helping people cross the Allegheny river, they are integral part of the skyline and serve as gathering places for baseball games and occasional festivals. During the holidays this year, one of them will be turned into a piece of art. - See more at: http://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/Best-of-the-Burgh-Blogs/The-412/July-2016/Environmental-Art-Project-to-Light-Up-Pittsburgh-Bridge-for-the-Holidays/#sthash.r3LRxbNL.dpuf

I’ve always loved bridges, especially when they’re lit up. Pittsburgh and Philly, where I live, are similar in terms of rivers, so we have a lot of bridges. I’ve always been interested in them, the way they’re built, but also the aesthetic of lighting them up for special events and holidays. I’m pretty sure Pittsburgh has more bridges than Philly because the rivers are so thin, so it’ll be cool to see all three of the bridges lit up. I’m wondering what that will do to the skyline, though. Too much intensity and it’ll take away from the beauty of the lights. They’re gonna have to get the intensity just right so it’s not overwhelming or too hard to see. Overall, I think it’s a fascinating project. Any effort to save the earth is a good one. And since this is not only eco friendly but it’s pretty as well, so thumbs up.

Coming from New York when I imagine a bridge being lit I imagine a grand spectacle considering the size of the bridges crossing the Hudson and the East river, so lighting for bridges has always interested me because of the challengers a lighting designer would face dealing with putting instruments on a functioning bridge and making sure not to disturb drivers. Dealing with lighting a bridge also heavily relies on the time during which you choose to light the bridge because the intensity should depend on how much sunlight, if any, will be relevant during the time period in which you light the project.

Although I have stayed in Pittsburgh for only 6 weeks, I really enjoys the rivers across the city, and even more the three sister bridges over it. Bridges take not only elegant design, but also complex and precise architecture and physics, and they are wonderful features to decorate, especially during holidays. LED is really suitable for large scale, decorative lighting, and even the small bridge behind Purnell that is designed by our students is amazing. I’m really exciting to see if the company can really light up Pittsburgh!
