Axanar: The $1 Million Star Trek Fan Film CBS Wants to Stop

Hit & Run : Reason.com: Since its launch in 1966, Star Trek has inspired intense devotion from generations of fans with five live-action television series spanning 50 years and a sixth set to launch in 2017. And this month's release of Star Trek Beyond, helmed by Fast and Furious director Justin Lin, will mark the franchise's 13th feature film.

The use of worlds that fans love to create art featuring characters and plot elements has become a source of much controversy with the growth of fan made films and other media using copyrighted source material, and I am interested to see how the fight the corporations have been bringing to fan made films will affect the fans. Although a legitimate case is easy to put together against such a high budget, planned feature length fan film such as Axanar that could be and is most likely looked at as competition, fan support goes a long way in franchises that can sell based on name and source material alone, and this kind of action against fans will definitely be turning off many Trekkies. I hope this issue can be resolved in a way that gives Axanar the green light, but it’s not a perfect world and I think many fans, including myself, will take offense to the franchise infringing on their ability to express their passion for the material.
