Blue Man Group costumes stolen in Wichita

The Wichita Eagle: Someone made off with more than $1,000 worth of the Blue Man Group’s costumes late Tuesday night or Wednesday morning at Century II, Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said.

The stolen items included a towel and several outfits, Woodrow said Wednesday.

What a weird thing for someone to want to steal, I would never think that the Blue Man Group would be a target of something like this. I remember that when I saw the Blue Man Group a few years ago their costumes didn't seem all that complex, with them mostly being compromised of black shirts and black pants. However these costumes must have a significant amount of value, as in the photo it looks like the thief only took one laundry basket and yet over $1000's worth of costumes were stolen. Maybe the thief didn't know this while taking the costumes. This reminds me of something very similar that happened this fall in my hometown. Between the two runs of the high school's production of Dracula a woman broke in and stole every dress that had a corset inside of it to re-purpose as a Halloween costume. What she didn't know was that she had taken over $400 worth of costumes, as they had all been rented. Eventually they tracked her down and were able to recover half of the costumes that she hadn't cut up yet, but it's still crazy to think that she would do this in the first place. Perhaps both of these people didn't consider the value of the property they were taking, because then they may have thought twice about stealing clothes.

This seems like a strange and rather feckless theft. The marketability of the items on any kind of black market seems very limited, and I find myself doubting that there is a great demographic of people clamoring for costumes worn by the Blue Man Group. There may be a few out there, but hardly enough to justify the theft. The theft aside, I think this raises important questions and concerns as to venue safety and security. The fact that this alleged perpetrator merely followed a worker inside, and was able to move through the venue for close to two hours undetected and unapprehended is startling. Suppose the intruder has had a more malicious intent than simple theft. While I would imagine that performing and executing a show in Wichita does not carry the same risks as carrying out a show in a more populated city, like New York, attention to security must still be given the utmost priority.

This is crazy! Who does that? I cannot believe someone just walked in and stole costumes from the Blue Man Group. It sounds so crazy that I don't think it was a planned theft, of I want to steal the Blue Man Group's costumes. If the guy walked around backstage for 2 hours then took them and left, it seems so strange to be a planned thing. I have no idea what he was thinking and why he did it, but any way it is not ok. First of all its just stealing, and illegal action. But, come on, don't steal one of the most valuable parts of a show. I want to know if the next show was still able to go on, or if they stole so many of the costumes that they had to cancel or make changes or anything. This also brings up how poor the security is. If he got their by just following someone in the employee entrance, then clearly the entrance needs to have better security. He was also wondering around for 2 hours, and no one thought that was weird to have a stranger walking around. This whole thing is crazy and just mean. I guess the police should look and see if any new Blue Man Group merchandise end up on Ebay.
