The Magic’s in the Glass

Rosco Spectrum: For a production of The Tempest at Western Illinois University, I needed to create a world that complemented the “geode design,” constructed by scenic designer Tammy Honesty – while still playing with the magic that was at the heart of the play.

As soon as I saw that this was about the Tempest I immediately clicked on it, because I think that's one of my favorite shows to see designed in different ways. This lighting design is so beautiful and I think complemented the "geode" idea that the set designer was going for very well. This kind of prismatic, opal-like effect seems as difficult to capture as it is beautiful, but the designer did a great job. I think this overall design-- costumes, set, and lights-- is a cool example of how each element of the design must work together to create a cohesive idea, especially if that idea is something as concrete as a geode. I also loved how this light-focused analysis of the design idea revealed the deeper meaning behind the geode: that it represented how brighter, more ethereal things can be concealed in a seemingly dense material. Once I knew that this was the idea behind the design, the lightning choices seemed to correlate even more with the story line.
